[ Alice's imps will leave a card, in addition to a cannister of loose-leaf tea that she's blended herself, in a strange tea cup. If you feel so inclined, there's a small box of cookies she's made. A Wonderland signature, but still very much an Alice thing to do. ]
[ At some point on Yule, Saralegui will be delivered a fine burlwood box, small and velvet-lined. Inside is a sprig of holly, a folded note, and a red metal ring. ]
Saralegui,
Inside is a ring; it'll let you teleport within the drabwurld, wherever you need to go. A lord must needs be thirty places at once, sometimes. Hopefully this should help lessen the burden.
[The gift is a little late, but the Brucolac's been busy, and he didn't realise gifts were meant to be given until people started giving them to him. It's a fighting knife with a white leather sheath. A piece of red ribbon is wrapped about its handle, along with a sprig of holly, and it's delivered by one of Sara's own men upon returning to Redgate.]
On my first visit to Redgate, I was given a red ribbon for luck. I ended up nearly dying on the back of a dragon, so perhaps it doesn't work—but I consider my introduction to the place fortunate enough.
Re the knife: throat, hands, feet, eyes. Don't waste your time anywhere protected by the ribcage.
May winter's bite lack teeth, to you and to Redgate.
[A return gift and note comes a few days afterwards, definitely late but hey, he wasn't really doing the gifts thing either until he started reviving gifts himself.]
Thank you for the very considerate gift. The least I can do in return is test it out for your sake.
Saralegui
[And with the note comes a vial of blood, wrapped in cloth and fabric to survive the trip -- his own, of course.]
[ truthfully, korra's not expecting to speak with anyone directly, and maybe it's just as well if she simply leaves a message for the new lord of redgate to get to when he will. she's... meant to call and let him know of this sooner, but things tend to not stop for a moment in the drabwurld, and the loss of mako's bending has shaken her to the core and all her plans were set back days because she had to make sure she got mako, rizhao, their things, and bolin out of the castle and somewhere safe.
still, she sounds accepting of her fate. still terrified, of course (her voice wavers at the start), and she's not resigning herself to anything. but she knows this might kill her, but it's been a long time coming for everyone involved. ]
My name's Korra, and I'm sure you know all about me by now, so I'll spare you the details. The reason I'm contacting you is because I'm coming back to Redgate. I've been away too long and I know there are some things I have to make right there. [ as if she ever could, but that's not the point. the point is that she'll try. ] I should be there in a few days and I intend to stay as long as you need me to so that you can arrange a trial — Harry mentioned one.
[ she'd like to ask "please don't take my shard," but she knows better than to do something like that, and she doesn't want to be reduced to begging. ]
I'll send Bolin in when we arrive; he's a Champion of Redgate and less likely to be turned away from the city. I'll be waiting for your guards, and I'll come quietly.
[Saber, you should know by now that court-affiliated things are going to be the things he gives the least amount of shit about. You're lucky he likes you already.]
For you, no additional weight is required. But go ahead, ask of me what you will.
[Good thing this is a private message, and one he receives while alone in his office. It means he can be childish for a moment and grimace at his locket without anyone to see it. Yes, he certainly knows all about her, and the list of her crimes that's been sitting on his desk for weeks now has been his greatest headache.
But, ever the cool and professional ruler, none of that irritation leaks into his voice when he answers her.]
At least it can be said that you came voluntarily.
[It's little more than an acknowledgement of her intent, but that's all he can offer right now.]
[She still is calling as the General, Sara. Just making sure he knew that.]
The Seelie are gathering forces and plan to march upon Caer Scima. Redgate is Unseelie affiliated and the High-King has named me General.
I would like you to open your city to civilians and others of Unseelie alignment as refuge when the Seelie brings war to our lands. I ask no soldiers, just solace for those seeking shelter and protection from Seelie enemies.
[He knows, and that's the only reason he won't argue that "Unseelie alignment" specification here.]
I was going to offer as much anyway. But it's good to know you've been thinking about those less able to defend themselves, even with all the other duties that have been no doubt keeping you busy.
You'll make sure to keep yourself safe as well, I trust?
Redgate is very defensible. It is the best location to house them until we push the Seelie back to Glaschu. I would like you to send scouts out to watch for Seelie movement east of Daonna and to protect the road so refugees can reach your city safely.
As for myself? I lead from the front lines, Saralegui. I always have and I always will.
Of course. This isn't the first war I've experienced, you know. I'm grateful for your advice, Your Majesty, but have a little faith. I know what I'm doing.
[It's really only because he likes you that the response is as gentle as that. The Brucolac has said it before: Saralegui tends to take advice as insult.]
I don't expect you to hide where it's safe. But I do hope you'll be rational about what you can and can't handle.
Is it so wrong to state what I would like? I could certainly go into great depths as to what I would do in this situation if Redgate were my city, but I am not. [She gave a bit of a huff at the end of it, but her tone wasn't upset in the slightest.]
And rationality has little to do with things, Saralegui. I am a heroic spirit - a legendary king - and a hero fights for what they believe in with everything they have. Whether we can 'handle it' or not. Rest assured; I bear the Sword of Promised Victory. Defeat is unacceptable.
In short: Tarz is a problem. Our friend did not react well to the news. Man in question had a wife who worked for neutrality and she and Tarz' wife were very brutally murdered by Unseelie for it. I don't even want to tell you the details.
He can light enemies up in a snap as well. Brutal was the word used.
Step cautiously and have a back up plan to get people in Redgate elsewhere - your accountability and mine will be on the line otherwise. I assume any threats are not issued idly.
It's good to be confident. But don't forget that other worlds don't necessarily play by the same rules as your own. What always worked back home might not be so dependable against the obstacles faced here.
Not necessarily. I'm looking to arrange defenses on the Western Road to deal with potential threats on their way to Redgate. I don't expect anything so strong as to repel threats on their own, but something that might alert a specific person of trouble coming Redgate's way should suffice.
Harry's my gut instinct, but fuck if I know how busy he is these days. Kaldur has been working on wards, so I would consider tapping him for resources but not setting it up since court bullshit.
